WESTERN CAPE

The South African Museum in Cape Town is the custodian of some of the finest examples of rock art in the world. These include the Linton Panel, a superb example of San paintings from the farm Linton on the Eastern Cape. The panel has been in the museum since 1918.

KWAZULU-NATAL

Giant's Castle
Main Caves in the Giant's Castle Game Reserve in the Central Drakensberg is one of the most important San rock art sites. There are more than 500 paintings, some 800 years old, displayed on two massive rock overhangs. Many paintings depict the eland - an antelope revered by the San. The caves are a thirty-minute walk from the main camp.

Injasuti
Battle Cave in the Injasuti Valley is also in the Giant's Castle reserve. Its walls contain approximately 750 paintings, one of which illustrates a pitched battle between two warring San tribes. An 8-km walk from the main camp

Kalkoenskrans
Kalkoenskrans, near Aliwal North. The first site in South Africa to be declared a National Monument because of its variety and quality.

NORTHERN CAPE

Driekopseiland
Hundreds of rock engravings made by the Khoisan with stone tools form part of the Northern Cape's rich Stone Age heritage. On view at Driekopseiland, on the banks of the Riet River near Kimberley, are animal representations. The McGregor Museum in Kimberley has a complete record of these engravings

Wonderwerk Cave, 12km from Boesmansgat on the Kuruman Road.
The cave runs 140 m into the hillside of the Kuruman Hills. Richly coloured paintings feature abstract patterns, ostriches and large game, including elephants.

San rock art can be viewed on more than 27 farms in the district of Fouriesburg.
